  318.     The <span class="acronym">GIMP</span> provides a comprehensive toolbox in
  319.     order to quickly perform basic tasks such as making selections or
  320.     drawing paths. The many tools contained within The <span class="acronym">GIMP
  321.     </span>'s toolbox are discussed in detail here.
  322.   </p>
  323.         <p>
  324.     The GIMP has a diverse assortment of tools that let you perform a
  325.     large variety of tasks.  The tools can be thought of as falling
  326.     into five categories: <span class="emphasis"><em>Selection tools</em></span>, which
  327.     specify or modify the portion of the image that will be affected
  328.     by subsequent actions; <span class="emphasis"><em>Paint tools</em></span>, which
  329.     alter the colors in some part of the image; <span class="emphasis"><em>Transform
  330.     tools</em></span>, which alter the geometry of the image;
  331.     <span class="emphasis"><em>Color tools</em></span>, which alter the distribution of
  332.     colors across the entire image; and <span class="emphasis"><em>Other
  333.     tools</em></span>, which don't fall into the other four categories.

  336.     (In case you're curious, in Gimp lingo a "tool" is a way of
  337.     acting on an image that requires access to its display, either
  338.     to let you indicate what you want to do by moving the pointer
  339.     around inside the display, or to show you interactively the
  340.     results of changes that you have made.  But if you want to think
  341.     of a tool as a saw, and an image as a piece of wood, it probably
  342.     won't do you a great deal of harm.)
  343.   </p>

  345.     Most tools can be activated by clicking on an icon in the Toolbox.
  346.     Some, however (namely, the Color tools), are accessible only via
  347.     the menus, either as <span class="emphasis"><em>Tools->Color Tools</em></span> or as
  348.     <span class="emphasis"><em>Layer->Colors</em></span>. Every tool, in fact, can be
  349.     activated from the <span class="emphasis"><em>Tools</em></span> menu; also, every
  350.     tool can be activated from the keyboard using an accelerator key.
  351.   </p>
  352.         <p>
  353.     In the default setup, created when GIMP is first installed, not
  354.     all tools show icons in the Toolbox: the Color tools are omitted.
  355.     You can customize the set of tools that are shown in the Toolbox
  356.     using the <a href="ch04s17.html" title="17.┬áTools dialog">Tools dialog</a>.
  357.     There are two reasons you might want to 
  358.     do this:  first, if you only rarely use a tool, it might be easier
  359.     to find the tools you want if the distracting icon is removed;
  360.     second, if you use the Color tools a lot, you might find it
  361.     convenient to have icons for them easily available.  In any case,
  362.     regardless of the Toolbox, you can always access any tool at any
  363.     time using the <span class="guimenu">Tools</span> menu from an image
  364.     menubar.

  390.       causes its Tool Options dialog to appear below the
  391.       Toolbox.   If you don't have things set up this way, you
  392.       probably should:  it is very difficult to use tools effectively
  393.       without being able to manipulate their options.

  418.       Each tool has its own specific set of options.  The choices you make
  419.       for them are kept throughout the session, until you change them.  In
  420.       fact, the tool options are maintained from session to session.  The
  421.       persistence of tool options across sessions can sometimes be an
  422.       annoying nuisance:  a tool behaves very strangely, and you can't
  423.       figure out why until you remember that you were using some
  424.       unusual option the last time you worked with it, two weeks ago.
